THE MANATEES

I recently began working with indie rock outfit The Manatees due to them parting ways with their drummer.

Before the breakout of the recent pandemic, The Manatees had a 4 date tour booked as well as a slot at Teddy Rocks Festival alongside bands such as The Amazons and The Fratellis. They also had headline show at Rough Trade in Bristol booked as the final date.

Initial rehearsals with the band were very productive as they had already provided me with demos of all the tracks. I spent a couple of weeks writing out the structures so that the practises would be smooth sailing. The first practise we had together was - according to them - the best they'd had in a while!

All but one of The Manatees tracks are played to click and a backing track live. Thankfully I've had a lot of experience playing to click live with Squidge, but queuing the backing tracks from a laptop and playing along will a new experience for me in a live setting.

I'm currently working on a new single with the band as we will be recording drums in the studio soon. They asked me to write a drum part for the choruses of the song as they were struggling to find something that fit what they wanted. The song is very inspired by "AM" era Arctic Monkeys, so I've been listening to that album alongside The Manatees' tracks to write a part that is cohesive between both sounds.

As of right now, The Manatees have rescheduled some of the dates from the tour that never happened to October and November. Fingers crossed these shows go ahead!
